Two Life-Changing Lessons from My Wisdom Years
I want to share with you two of the most profound lessons I’ve learned in my life—lessons forged through walking through the fire and transforming challenges into gifts I wouldn’t trade for anything.
I’ve walked through darkness just like you have. I’m no different than you. These truths came to me the hard way, through experiences that nearly broke me. Yet today, I stand before you grateful for every single one of them, because of what I know now.
I hope these lessons will stay with you, ready when you need them most.
The First Great Lesson: Finding Light in the Darkest Moments
In 2005, I lost my younger brother. He was killed—a cold case that shattered my family’s world into pieces we didn’t know how to put back together.
That tragedy became the catalyst for the most significant personal growth of my life.
Out of the absolute worst thing that ever happened to me came the best thing: profound self-realization and spiritual awakenings that changed everything.
The second crucible was watching my son suffer from a rare genetic condition. I was helpless and wanted to trade my life for his, as I’d had a good life. But with a medical intervention, he is now thriving, healthy, and living his absolute best life.
During that time, I was deep in Byron Katie’s Institute, questioning my deepest fears and most limiting beliefs. From 2005 through 2017, life tested me again and again. It wasn’t easy.
Then came the third trauma in 2017. A near-fatal car wreck. Six major abdominal surgeries. Learning to walk not once, but twice. And during the third surgery, something extraordinary happened: a near-death experience (NDE) that took me beyond anything I’d ever imagined—a place of pure bliss where it felt like my ego was turned off.
The Awakening
During my son’s illness, I began to truly understand something: the higher power, the Universe—what I call my God, the God of my understanding (and each of you has your own form of belief, and that’s beautiful too). My God is loving power beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.
The Universe (God) wants nothing but the best for all of us, and the love is absolute. We are all equal no matter our race or color of our skin.
Here’s the most profound truth I’ve discovered:
I don’t have anything to fear, because I’ve already walked through my worst fears.
Will more challenges come? Absolutely. And that doesn’t scare me anymore. Right now, even as the world spins in chaos and dark energy, I’m anchored in contentment. Tomorrow might be different—these energetic states of consciousness don’t last forever. But I’ve learned to rest here when I can, having completed some challenging inner work. There is more to come.
I will never stop being curious. I will never stop learning or growing.
But here’s what changed everything: my mind now has evidence. It has proof of how benevolent the Universe (God) is during these times.
I can see now what I couldn’t see before—that things were put in place before, during, and after each trauma to help me through it.
I can find the good even in the hardest times.
Finding Good in the Worst Moments
As they wheeled me into my hospital room after being air-evacuated from Baja, Mexico, to Sharp Memorial in San Diego, after my third surgery to remove an abcess from my small bowel, I asked my husband John:
“John, can you find the good in all of this?”
Without hesitation: “Yes, I see so much love.”
When you face your fears, you discover that even in your most challenging experiences, it’s always about love.
I could see clearly that my spiritual guides had prepared the way before each trauma, making it easier while I was going through it and after.
Listen to this, because it’s vital: When you’re going through the worst thing in your life, there are already things in place to help you.
The Power of Surrender
During that third trauma in Baja, reality crashed down: I had no control. My husband couldn’t speak Spanish. No one at the hospital spoke English. I might not survive.
In that moment of complete helplessness, I said:
“God, I’m in your hands,” then I let go.
The instant I surrendered, miracles began to unfold.
When you surrender your will to the Universe or the God of your understanding, that’s when the miracles start to happen.
We cling to the illusion of control. We exhaust ourselves trying to force things with our self-will. But that’s like pushing boulders uphill, straining against the very flow of life.
Finding the good in the worst things that have happened to you will lead you to the best things in your life.
I would not trade my life and those experiences for what I know now. They’ve lifted me to a higher level of consciousness. I’m not claiming enlightenment—I’m telling you I’m far more self-aware, and that consciousness has set me free.
The Second Great Lesson: The Gift of Free Will
Here’s the other profound truth: We have free will. We get to choose how we move through our experiences.
During my near-death experience, a divine voice—unmistakably divine—spoke to me telepathically:
“You get to choose how you go through this experience. What will you choose?”
In that moment, I telepathically replied:
I don’t want to be a victim. I’ll choose the high road. I’ll heal using love and gratitude.
And that’s exactly what I did. I used love and gratitude to heal. These two emotions are two of the highest frequencies you can embody. The Buddha mind resonates at one thousand on David Hawkins’, MD, PhD, Map of Consciousness. NDEs register at 600. Grief and shame are 23 and 27. Death sits at zero.
I’ve learned that you don’t stay at one level permanently. You can rise to incredible heights and have an awakening then come back to your baseline. After the NDE, I lived in the energy of bliss and love (541) for about four months. But the ego returns, eager to reclaim control and convince you to listen to its fearful voice.
Remember this: You always have a choice about your attitude—about how you’ll move through what you’re facing.
Will you go through it kicking and screaming? Or will you move through it with courage?
What I know for certain is this: God rewards courage.
My spiritual teacher, Beverly, taught me that, and now I have evidence—lived proof—that it’s true.
Living in Peace
These days, I don’t have much to fear. Can I still get scared and rattled? Absolutely. Can I slip into worry? Of course. But I work to stay anchored in peace.
This is what I’ve learned. This is what I want you to carry with you. When your moment comes—and it will come—remember: there’s already help in place.
You have a choice in how you respond. And on the other side of your deepest fear lies your greatest gift.
